Brief Literacy Info. |
It is estimated nationally that 1 in 5 adults over 18 years of age is functionally illiterate. Our goal is to recruit and encourage individuals to improve their literacy skills. Caring and personal attention, realistic and relevant goal setting, and sensitivity to family issues are components of our program. In our adult literacy programs, volunteers provide free one-on-one tutoring to students. Free educational materials are provided. Survival skills English, pre-literacy language development, and beginning reading are offered in one-on-one or small group instruction. Childcare and transportation are offered to participants in the Project FLOWER program at the Grace Episcopal class location only. As students gain confidence and skills, they can then continue on to the more advanced ESL classes offered by Western Piedmont Community College. |

5. Donate gently used children’s books – we offer these books in pediatrician offices, Health Department, and Social Services waiting rooms. 6. Financially support our programs through a donation to help alleviate illiteracy in Burke County. 7. Many onetime opportunities are available as needed.
