Our Programs

Burke Literacy Council offers free, supportive programs designed to help adults, children, and families grow in confidence, strengthen literacy skills, and create brighter futures. Through the dedication of volunteers and community partners, we provide welcoming learning opportunities throughout Burke County.

In our Adult Literacy Programs, trained volunteers provide free one-on-one tutoring and small group instruction. Educational materials and literacy resources are provided at no cost. Class levels include survival English, pre-literacy language development, and beginning reading. As students build skills and confidence, many continue their education through advanced ESL classes offered by Western Piedmont Community College.

Drop-in ESL Classes

Our Drop-In ESL Classes provide a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment where English language learners can build reading, writing, and speaking skills.

Designed with flexibility in mind, this program allows students to attend as their schedules permit—without the pressure of a strict schedule. Learners can come and go as needed, making it easier to stay engaged without feeling like they’ve fallen behind.

Classes are led by trained community volunteers and offered at no cost. Instruction is provided in one-on-one or small group settings, helping students build confidence and strengthen everyday communication skills at their own pace.

Childcare is available for participants, helping remove barriers and create greater access to learning opportunities.
